Making sure that you have the right jewellery making tools are vital for both yours and the wearer's safety. Not only does it ensure that your product is created correctly with the correct finish, but it prevents you from any accidents in your workshop, that could be a direct result from using the wrong tools.
For experienced jewellers, knowing their tools will be second nature, but to beginners, it is important that you are aware of the right tools to use for each stage of the jewellery making process, especially when it comes to heating, cutting and bending.
Cutting
Cutting wire and making loops should leave the piece with a smooth and safe finish. To do this you should be using flush cutters. These will make sure that only one end of the wire is cut with a straight, flush surface and the other with a pointed, slanted surface. The flat surface should always be the one left on the product. Make sure that you hold both ends of the wire while cutting; the cut can result in one end of the wire flying off, which could potentially hit somebody. A burr cup is often used to smoothen the end of a piece of wire until it is safe.
